How do I change attachment default program in Outlook 2000

Liege

My email picture attachments in Microsoft Outlook 2000 are for some reason
defaulting to my photo editor program which doesn't automatically view the
picture. Additional steps must be taken. How can I reset the default
program for quick viewing such as Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. (or is
there a default program that it is supposed to use in Outlook?

Outlook doesn't control this but Windows. You can set this in Control
Panel-> Folder Options-> tab File Types

How do we set this in control panel>folder options> file types. I did not
find a way , while looking at the file types. I have lots of file types
listed, I would think they all should be active.

What OS are you using? In XP, Save a picture to My Documents (or use one
with the same extension that is already in my documents or my pictures).
Right click on it and choose Open with... then more options. Select the
viewer you want to use and check the box to always use that one.

Diane;

I have Windows XP Home.

I do not think that answers my question. How , ever I'll see what happens.

Why, when I get an attachment to my email, it does not show up in the
email, but I get a icon with a red x , when I right click on it I get menu,
select all . When I left click on it nothing shows.

I can click on the attachment an open it in my Corel Photo.

The attachments used to show up in the email also, and I could print them
off from there , without opening the attachment.

Thanks , Imo

I am not having the problem with my other files and documents pics They all
open fine also with the open with option if you want to change it. The
problem only exists in my Outlook. Outlook does not give you the Open With
option.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

How do you go about resetting your Outlook attachment default program with
these instructions? I am not sure what to do.

Use the Folder Options applet in Control Panel.

Outlook uses what is defined in the OS, it doesn't have it's own setting.

What are your exact symptoms?

You should have mentioned the red x in the original message - 'defaulting to
my photo editor program which doesn't automatically view the picture.
Additional steps must be taken.' is a different issue.

Assuming there is no text telling you to 'right click here to download
pictures' and the images show if you hit reply or forward, try emptying the
securetemp folder.

Thank for hanging in there with me Diane. I still haven't found the solution
yet.

Here is what happens when clicking on a photo attachment in Outlook.

1. The program default opens up "Print Shop," a photo-editing program. The
program itself takes a while to open.
2. The program does not recognize the image and will not open it for quick
view.
3. If you want to use the Print Shop program to open the file you need to
use the program and import the file. Too many steps! (I only want to use this
program to edit pictures, not to use it for viewing of email attachments)
4. Another thing I have been doing for now, is copying and pasting the
images to the desktop and opening them from there. Clicking the image brings
up a window for "viewing." The desktop defaults to, "Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer," to open. This also is to many steps though.

So back to my original question: How do I reset the default program so
Outlook can default to another "quick view" program such as "Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer?"

Thanks

Do you have a red x in the picture place holder?

Normally, the fix for outlook using the wrong program to open a message is
to change the default image application - this is the application that opens
the message when you double click on it in Windows Explorer.

You can either change it using the Tools, File Types menu in Windows
Explorer or by right clicking on an image (of the same type you need to
change the default application for) and choosing Open with... at the bottom
of this menu is Choose program. Add a check to always use this program and
select the application (will need to browse for it). You can do this either
from My Documents or the Desktop.

If you want to use one application in Outlook and a different one from
windows explorer or the desktop (such as for editing), you'll need to right
click on it in windows explorer and choose the other program from the Open
with menu. Many applications will add themselves to the open with menu if
they can handle the file type, others (usually older ones) need selected
once by browsing for the program file.

I'm kinda surprised Print Shop took over as the image handler if it can't
open them directly. You may need to go into Tools, File Types (from Windows
Explorer) and find the extension type. If you see Restore button at the
bottom the dialog, click it. This should change it to the original one
windows signed. If not, choose Change and pick the fax viewer.

Also, empty the securetemp folder. This could be causing the print shop
error.

This changed the program to open .jpg files, but the default for the saved
photo is still "photosuite" in my case, not Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
All of my jpg files still show under File Type in Windows Explorer
"photosuite image." How do I permanently change the default back to MOPM??
Thanks, JLB
