How do I change the alignment of a single line of text?

I want the text on one page to be a left-aligned paragraph. I want the next
section of text on the next page to be centered, but Word won't let me do it.
It always changes the alignment on the other page. I can have as many
alignments as I want on the same page, no problem. What's going on?

I would hazard a guess that both paragraphs are actually one
paragraph. Are you displaying the paragraph marks? They're the funny
symbols that display on your screen looking like backwards "P" but
don't show up on the printout. If not, on the Standard toolbar, click
on the Show/Hide button. It looks like the funny backwards P. Then
look at the paragraph in question. On the first page does it end in
the paragraph symbol? If not, break the paragraph where you want it
to break. Make the first paragraph left-aligned and the next
centered.
