How do I change the background color of a page IN PAGE VIEW

I'm using Word 2004 on a Mac. When I change the background color in
takes me out of page view and moves me into normal with removes
margins, etc., If I shift back to page view, the page goes back to
white. There must be an easy way to change this.

Hi Nick;

You first have to understand that there is no such thing as a "page' in the
structure of a Word document. See this link for an explanation:

The Background Color option is for creating web pages, not document pages &
the view you're being switched to is Online Layout, not Normal View. The
Background Colors do not print nor do they display in anything other than
Online Layout View... And no, this can't be changed, easily or otherwise.

If you want colored "pages" you can use Insert> Watermark. Or you can add a
colored graphic in the Header/Footer view. Keep in mind that it will consume
a lot of ink when printed and will likely over-saturate the paper, causing
blurring and/or smearing of the text. Either method may fully display but
most likely won't print edge-to-edge.

All I want to do is type on a light blue or light yellow page, in page
view. I can do this in AbiWord and other programs fairly easily. Is
this not possible? If so, how? I tried insert Watermark and the
options did not include colors.

If this is for your visual preference while working I'm afraid there are no
such features in Word. The only thing even close to what you're asking for
is a legacy feature in Word> Preferences> General where you can tick the box
for "Blue background, white text".This is for viewing only so the document
isn't actually affected & prints in black on white. Any other option would
involve the use of a graphic object as I described.
