how do I change the border colour of the active cell?

the border colour of teh active cell is currently a very thin light blue and
is difficult to see; I'd like to cahange to bold black but can't find a way
to do so.

You can change the color of the gridlines in the preferences menu, 'view'
tab. However I'm almost certain you can't get them bold.

The border is set in the System Preferences, Appearance pane. Change the
Highlight Color to the color you'd like.

Note that this will change the highlight color for every other
application, too.

Another method you may want to try is Chip Pearson's RowLiner add-in:
