How do I change the colors under the Highlight icon

The colours under the Highlight icon in Word 2003 are too dark and I would
like to tone them down or pick different colours, especially the blue.
Whenever I try to highlight a word, sentence using the blue it is very hard
to read what is written underneath the colour. Can these colours be changed
and if so, how?
