How do I change the default from metric to British Standard?

It's a dialog box I cannot find and Help doesn't categorize this matter in or
under any sensible context

Are you trying to change the ruler measurement? If so, go to Tools | Options
and the General tab. You will find the measurement unit near the bottom of
the dialog box. If this is not what you want post back with more details.
