How do I change the numbering format?

I am in using a Word document created by someone else. I am having a problem
with the number. For instance, I need to change the numbering from 1.01,
1.02, 1.03, etc to 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc. When I attempt to customize, the
numbering changes to 1.1 for everything. What am I doing wrong?
