How do I change the position of the page numbers?

I am using Word 2003. I went through "Insert" to put page numbers in the
document. I set them for "center," but it still puts them on the left side
of the bottom of the page. In fact, no matter what I do, the are always put
on the left side. What am I doing wrong?

I don't know why you're not getting the expected results, but here are two
ways to correct the problem:

First Method: Correct the alignment.

1. View | Header and Footer.

2. Select the frame containing the page number (it's easier to see this if
you have text boundaries displayed) and right-click.

3. Choose Format | Frame and, for horizontal position choose "Center
relative to margin." OK to close.

Second Method (preferred): Replace the page number with a footer

1. View | Header and Footer.

2. Select the frame containing the page number (make sure you have the frame
selected--you'll see six black handles) and press Delete.

3. Press Ctrl+E to center the footer paragraph.

4. Click the Insert Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar.

5. If your footer contains other text, you can use the built-in tab stops
instead of center alignment; there's a center-aligned tab stop at 3" (the
center position of the default 6" footer paragraph), as well as a
right-aligned one at 6". If you have changed your document margins, you'll
need to move the tab stops to be at the center and right margin of your
actual footer.
