How do I change the size of the navigation pane for one area

How do I change the size of the navigation pane for one area like calendar
(to show two calendars at the top), but leave the mail navigation pane at the
smaller size? It seems to stay however I set it throughout - I want the old
way where in each area the navigation pane size could be set and it would
stay for that area.
