How do I close an open dialog box?

When I open a document, before the document opens I receive a "!" with the
following message: "The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is
open. Click OK, and then close open dialog boxex to continue."

When I click OK, the document opens and I move on with no problems.
However, this is a new thing that did not happen until a couple of months
ago. Any ideas what might be happening?
