How do I close Outlook completely (continues to run as a process)?

I have Outlook 2003 and have set it up with 3 user profiles. When I close
Outlook to go to another user profile, Outlook closes but continues to run
(?) as noted by both the Outlook icon in the tray and the "Outlook" process
listing which appears under the "Processes" tab in the Windows Task Manager
(which I get with a CNTL + ALT + DEL.

This is a standalone installation and does not use Windows Exchange Server
or any other add ins.

So you have nothing configured that hooks into or integrates with Outlook
such as synch software for a handheld, antivirus, Skype, Vista sidebar, etc?

Open Outlook in safe mode. When you then close Outlook, does it continue to
run in the processes? Note that it may take a few seconds to to close,
saving updates to the PST.

Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe
(note the space between outlook.exe and /safe)

Vista: Start > Start Search > outlook.exe /safe
(same space)

Here is a list of the most common culprits for holding Outlook open, and
some further troubleshooting steps:
