How do I configure mail client to use authentication? Error 550

I try to send a message and this appears:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'(e-mail address removed)' on 9/16/2005 5:37 PM
550 Please configure your mail client to use authentication.

I have got a setting wrong somewhere & can not figure it out. It doesn't do
it on all outgoing mail.
