How do I convert a fraction to its true decimal, not a date no.

I have imported a file into excel with fractions. When I convert the
fractions to decimals, it converts to a date number. e.g. 3/1 converts to
39085 as it sees it not as 3 but as the 3rd January. Any ideas?

Try checking "Transition Formula Entry" in the Tools|Options Transition tab
then select the column, choose Data|Text to columns and click Finish. Uncheck
this option after.

Check the format of cells where you are impoting data make it number before
you import because by default excel will take those fractional values as
dates.
