how do i convert a .tmp file to a .vsd file?

Visio crashed and left me with a .tmp file. Autorecovery wasnt able to open
it. I tried opening it by double clicking, and file > open. I also tried
renaming it with a .vsd extension. I lost 8 hours of work because of this.
Anyone have any ideas?
