How do I convert dates mailmerged out of excel from american forma

Merging a date into word document from excel it appears in american format
mm/dd/yyy. How can I convert it to british format dd/mm/yyyy in merged
document

I'm having same problem with English (Australian). I've
tried formating in it in Excel before merging and the
default in word is is English (Australian) but I haven't
been able to figure out how to fix it yet.
