How do I convert hours and mins into just minutes in excel?

I want to convert 2hr 42mn(in one cell) to 162mn. Is there a formula to do
this?
Also, is there anyway to enter the 2 hrs and 42 mins in one cell where it
will be recognized as hours and mins, and not as a time of day.
