How do I convert regular black to CMYK black in publisher?

I have some pages of a catalog I do and usually they are printed in black &
white. This year I wanted 4 color. The pictures and colored text I put into
CMYK when doing the changes. However, the printer said that my black is
coming out on all four plates because the black is not just K. How can I
change this before I make a PDF without going through and highlighting all
the text and lines and changing to 100% K?

It's just what Publisher does. You would be far better served to print the
Publisher file as RGB and use something like PDF Enhancer from Apago (Yes, I
do sell PDF Enhancer) to process the RGB color to CMYK and to keep the
blacks "black". It's pretty cheap and *very* powerful while being "stupid
simple" to use. Once the configuration file is made, you can have as many as
you want, you just drag and drop the PDF onto the configuration file and it
does it. No fuss, no muss and you get a solid PDF for your printer.

I'd be happy to setup a webinar to show you just how fast and flexible it
is. Or if you like send me the PDF you gave your printer and I'll process it
and show you what comes out the other end. Have your printer take a look at
it too if you like for verification.

I don't know how you are making your PDFs, but if you are using Adobe, then
if you look at the Distiller settings, you can ask it to convert all colours
to CMYK. Then you don't have to worry what you do in Publisher. It will
convert your pictures as well

Depending on how your printer is setup you will still end up with rich
blacks for text. You really have to configure the drive correctly in the
first place. That makes a HUGE difference in the overall output.
