How do I convert Word Files from Western European to 97-2003 Doc.

Some of my files in Word are being converted to "Plain Text
Document---Western European (Windows)", which is unreadable. How this is
being converted I do not know. Furthermore, I do not know how to convert the
document to something that is readable. Can someone please advise? Thank
you.
