When I copy a diagram created in powepoint I can either get one complete
object or I can ungroup the picture and each line of text is its own object.
I want to be able to edit diagram in Visio.

Visio and PowerPoint have different display surfaces so there is no direct
conversion from one application to another. Typically you paste just an
image of your diagram in the other app or embed the diagram in the other
app. As you mention it is possible to paste a diagram as a metafile into
Visio and then ungroup it into a bunch of primitive objects.
