How do I correct the "smart quotes?"

How do I correct a "smart quote" when the beginning quote starts with an
ending quote? All the other smart quotes are ok.

Hi, daijo. Some earlier in the document, you probably have a beginning quote
that does not have a corresponding ending quote.

Occasionally Word guesses wrong about whether you want an opening or closing
quote. When this happens, you can force it to use the one you want, using
these shortcuts:

Ctrl+', ' = apostrophe or closing single quote (that is, press the Ctrl and
apostrophe keys simultaneously, release, and then press apostrophe again)

Ctrl+`, ` = opening single quote

Ctrl+', " = closing double quote

Ctrl+`, " = closing double quote

The ` is the key usually at the top left corner of the keyboard.

Another approach is to insert a space before or after the quote as needed to
make Word use the right kind, then delete the space.

Or copy/paste the quote character you want from somewhere else.

BTW, one reason why Word might guess wrong is that the language is wrong.
Different languages use different quote characters, so it might be worth
checking "Tools > Language > Set language...".

Klaus

This still doesn't answer the question of how to get the DOUBLE opening smart
quote to face in the correct direction. It addresses single opening smart
quotes and double closing. Anyone have the answer???
