How do I create a circle with a number in the centre?

I'm using Word. I want to create, on special paper that makes waterslideable
transfers, the numbers used on old-fashioned racing cars: black numbers on a
white disc. I thus wish to create a perfect circle, with the number in the
centre: then I print both on to the transfer paper, then cut round the circle
to get my perfect disc with a black number in the centre.

You can, for example, draw a circle in which you draw a text box for the
number. I have included all the steps below:

1. Open the Drawing toolbar (View > Toolbars > Drawing). The tools mentioned
below are found in that toolbar.
2. Click the Oval tool. Press and hold the Shift key while you drag
diagonally to draw a perfect circle (the size depends on the distance you
drag).

Make sure the _circle_ is selected (shows small handles) during the
following steps.
3. Select “No Fill†as the fill color (Fill Color tool, i.e. the paint pot).
4. Select a thin, e.g. gray outline you can use for cutting (Line Style
tool, Line Color tool).

Create a text box for the number:
5. Select the Text Box tool. Press and hold the Shift key while you drag
diagonally to draw a square text box inside the circle.
6. To center the text box in relation to the circle, select both shapes
(Shift-click). Select Draw > Align or Distribute > Align Center. Select Draw
Align or Distribute > Align Middle.

7. In the text box, type the number you wish. Select the number and align
the text center. Select the font and font size as you wish (tools in the
Formatting toolbar).

Make sure the _text box_ is selected during the following steps.
8. Select “No Fill†as the fill color (Fill Color tool).
9. Remove the outline (Line Tool > No Line).

You may need to make misc. adjustments for a perfect result.

NOTE: If Preview shows an empty page, select Tools > Options > Print tab and
check the “Drawing objects†button.

The steps from (5) on are somewhat superfluous, as you can click on the
AutoShape and choose "Add Text," which creates a text box (No Line, No Fill)
in the AutoShape. It is part of the AutoShape, so need to align or group,
but you may want to reduce the text box margins to zero to increase the size
of the number.

The "Add Text" feature is one I was slow to discover (having previously done
what you describe), and I don't always find it satisfactory, but it does
have the advantages I stated.

Hi,

If you only need the numbers 1-20, try looking in the 'Enclosed Alphanumerics' portion of the 'Arial Unicode MS' font.

Cheers
