How do I create multiple workbooks within one workbook

K

Ken C

I'm not a programmer so this may sound dumb, but how do I create one workbook
combining about 5 workbooks or better yet take 5 workbooks and put them all
into one master workbook where they cam be tabed through. I'm not versed on
vb so I don't understand it very much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't have multiple workbooks in one workbook, but you can have multiple
*worksheets* within one workbook, so if you want to combine data from
worksheets in a number of original workbooks, use "Move or Copy Sheet" to
transfer or copy a sheet from one workbook to another.

How many sheets in each of the 5 workbooks?

Do these sheets have unique names that would not be duplicated in each of
the 5 workbooks?

Maybe just move the sheets from each workbook into one new workbook.

You can do that manually. Select all sheets in a workbook at once and
right-click on active sheet tab and Move or Copy>Create a copy

Otherwise you get into VBA which Ron de Bruin covers very well at his site.

dAVID WHAT i WANT TO DO IS SOMETHING LIKE HAVE SOME TABBED AREAS AT THE TOP
OF THE PAGE TITLED: INDEX, TRADE JOURNAL, SMO1 TRADES, SMO2 TRADES,
PROFIT/LOSS. AND HAVE ALL OF THEM IN WONE WORKBOOK TO WHERE i CAN TAB IN
BETWEEN THEM SO THAT THE ONE WORKBOOK WOULDN'T GET SO BIG THAT i COULDN'T ADD
TO IT LATER. TRADERXL HAS THIS FEATURE TO TAB BETWEEN DIFFERENT TASKS AND I
WAS WANTING TO DO THE SAME. THE TABS WOULD BE LOCATED AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE
JUST UNDER EXCEL'S MENU.

Excel worksheet tabs are at the bottom of the window and cannot be moved
from that position.

tHE NUMBER OF SHEETS IN EACH OF THE WORKBOOKS VARIES, THE TRADE JOURNAL WILL
HAVE NUMERIOUS SHEETS IN THEM NAMES BY EACH DIFFERENT STOCK TRADED. I WAS
WANTING TO BE ABLE TO HAVE IT TO WHERE I COULD JUST JUMP FROM THE TRADE
JOURNAL TO THE PROFIT/LOSS SHEET TO ENTER DATA AND TO BE ABLE TO GO FROM THE
SMO1 OR 2 SHEETS TO THE TRADE JOURNAL BOOK TO EHTER THE STOCK PER SHEET. SO
YOU SEE THAT THE TRADE JOURNAL BOOK WILL GET VERY LARGE SO IT WOULDN'T BE TOO
PRODUCTIVE TO HAVE THEM ALL IN ONE WORKBOOK UNLESS I CAN HAVE IT TO WHERE I
COULD HAVE THEM TABBED TO GO BETWEEN THEM.

It is possible to have multiple workbooks open in a single session of Excel.

You can even have multiple windows with a workbook/sheet in each window.

Would that serve your purpose?

Also............please drop the CAPS.......hard to read and very hard on the
ears.

K

Sorry about the caps I didn't notice them untill I submitted it. No multiple
workbooks open at the same time won't work due to the fact that some of the
data is also used on the others. If you go to the TraderXL.com website and
download and install either anilizerxl or traderxl you will see what I'm
trying to do.

I tried to post to one of the two websites that you mentioned but was unable
to upload the jpeg file, that is the reason that I posted the url address
that shows the inteerface that it uses.

Nice Demo but I think all the functions are a result of the application
interfacing with Excel.

I do not have the skills nor time to create anything similar.

Gord, Is there a way to have a menu set to go across row 1 of each workbook
to referance the others and open all of them at once, and be able to switch
between them? I think if this could be done then I could use it that way
although it would make the zip filesize a little large.

One of your replies to me was...........

Now you want multiple workbooks open?

Which version of Excel are you running?

You could create a workspace with all the workbooks in it.

When you open that workspace, all books will open.

In 2003 with 5 workbooks open go to File>Save Workspace.

In 2007 with 5 workbooks open go to View>Save Workspace.

The you can switch from one to another by either using the Taskbar or
View>Window>Switch Windows.

I have not worked enough with the Ribbon in 2007 to be able to give you an
idea for having a Toolbar with your workbooks on it for selection.

Right now I using office xp. Is there a way to create an addin menu that
would call up the different workbooks? You know add a menu item and list the
different workbooks under it? Is a workspace different than a workbook?
Does a workspace have unlimited or limited number of sheets available? I've
got 6 different workbooks due to thatwhen I use the trade journalone each
stock that is used would have it's own tab at the bottom so that one could
get very large after a while. And the same is true for the trade worksheets.
So you see that after a while it would get real cumbersom to try to find the
trades that you needed to find without having to scroll through all of them.

This is my problem. The friends that I want to share this with also use
either office 97, office xp or some actually use the office 2007 ver, ( just
a few of them though).

A workspace is a small file that contains pointers to multiple workbooks.

It is an *.xlw file

It does not contain the workbooks themselves.

Think of it as a batch file that has commands to open several files.

The workbooks opened can have multiple worksheets.

The workspace will take care of opening a set of workbooks.

Once opened you can navigate from book to book as I posted earlier.

You can navigate through the worksheets of each opened book when that book
is active.

I am not sure what else you want other than making Excel look and feel like
your preferred application.

If you want to go to the effort, you can create a Toolbar with a set of
buttons or menu items assigned to macros.

Sub show_one()
Windows("workbook_one.xls").Activate
End Sub

Sub show_two()
Windows("workbook_two.xls").Activate
End Sub

Gord

K

Ken C

I take that the
Sub show_one()
Windows("workbook_one.xls").Activate
End Sub

Sub show_two()
Windows("workbook_two.xls").Activate
End Sub

is how to attach different workbooks, correct?

How would you create a toolbar with a set of menu items o work with this?
Does it have to be in the *.xlw file?
Could you point me to a site that has these items referanced?
I greatly appreciate you putting up with my dumb questions and your help.

Thanks

G

Gord Dibben

No. The macros attach nothing.

The macros simply activate an already-open workbook.

One of the several that opened when you opened the workspace file *.xlw

You would have to place code into one of the workbooks to create the
Toolbar.

Or store the macros in an Add-in which is loaded through Tools>Add-ins and
create the Toolbar from that Add-in.

To create a Toolbar, add items to it and assign macros see Debra Dalglesih's
site for how-to.

BTW..........I see you have posted the same thing in excel.programming and
have replies from Don Guillett

Are you going to follow that thread also?
