How do I create outline numbering with styles that can be used in

V

In W2003, I created templates that used Heading 1, 2 styles (or similar
styles with my own names) to produce the following outline numbering pattern.
I then created TOCs that used only the first two or three of these styles.

1. This is Heading 1
1.1 This is Heading 2
1.1.1 This is Heading 3, etc.

In W2007, I can get the same look by creating a List Style that I named "vc
Outline" (Multilevel numbering button > Define New List). I can change
indentation levels with Tab or right-click and it all looks fine. The
problem is that although the List Style name is "vc Outline", the Styles pane
shows every one of the paragraphs as being formatted with "Paragraph List"
style. Therefore, I cannot assign the individual levels to a TOC.

What is the proper way to create this kind of outline numbering so that I
can also have a TOC using the paragraphs numbered with "1." and "1.1"?

Totally frustrated with this feature....... Vivian

Modify the list style and attach a *paragraph style* to each numbering
level. Then apply the appropriate paragraph style to text.

Thank you Stefan. Amazing how simple the answer seems! I searched
literally for hours and couldn't find the answer (never clicked the More
button in the Modify Mulitlevel List dialog - why do they use More buttons -
just show the whole dialog to begin with!). So, the following process works.
Can you please confirm that this is the correct approach?

Step 1: Create the styles that will later be applied to each level (the
traditional Heading 1, Heading 2 etc levels but I use my own style names to
avoid pasting of different definitions of Heading 1 etc between docs). When
creating these styles, in the Format Paragraph dialog box, do NOT change
indentation and do NOT change outline level - just leave the defaults. Do
not make any selections in the Format Numbering dialog box - leave the
default of None.

Step 2: Create the List Style (you can assign it a name for easy reference
but it has nothing to do with the styles that you assign to the paragraphs
later). When defining the 1st level, go to Format Numbering and in that
dialog box, for each level, set up all of the numbering fonts, indentation,
AND links to the appropriate styles created in Step 1. (I set the numbering
for each level while still defining the 1st list level because this seemed to
be the best way to do it in W2003.)

Step 3: Create your document and assign a paragraph style that was created
in Step 1 (e.g., the equivalent of Heading1). Then you can Tab and Shift Tab
(or right-click > Increase/Decrease Indentation) and the paragraph styles
will change to the appropriate ones for the level. Or you can assign the
appropriate styles from a Style Pane (or the Style Gallery or a zillion other
places that you might have elected to save it/see it).

Step 4: Create a TOC using the new styles that you created.

Thanks, Vivian
