How do I customize a numbered list in OneNote?

I am trying to make an outline in OneNote just like the one I use in Word.
It is very particular, and I don’t know how to replicate it in OneNote. Here
is an approximation of what it looks like in Word:

I. Line one
A. Line two
1. Line 3
a. Line 4
1) Line 5
a) Line 6

I have two problems making a list like this in One Note. First, I
understand how to customize each line to have the correct characters at the
beginning (I., A., 1., a., etc.), but I do not know how to make such a
customized list a default. It looks like I have to manually customize every
list, every time I want it to look like that. In Word, I was able to save my
customized list forma and choose it whenever I wanted to make an outline
according to that format. How do I do that in OneNote? Second, I cannot
seem to customize the indentation to look like my list in Word. Here is a
short sample of my Word format compared with what OneNote forces the
formatting to look like:

I. This is line one of Word
A. This is line two of Word
1. This is line three of Word

I. This is line one of OneNote
A. This is line two of OneNote
1. This is line three of OneNote

As you can see, the indentation is far more spread out in OneNote than in
Word, in many respects. Firstly, the number of spaces between the initial
character (I., A., 1., etc.) and the beginning of the word (in this case, the
word 'This') is much greater in OneNote than in Word. I only want about two
spaces between the character and the word. Secondly, in Word I have
customized subsequent lines to indent exactly as far as the first word of the
line above it, as you can see in my typed example ('A.' comes directly under
the 'T' of 'This'). But OneNote indents much farther than I prefer, and I
don't know how to change that.

So I have these two major formatting problems, and even if I can solve them,
I don't know how to set the solution as a default. Thanks for any help you
can give. I need it.

The tools aren't as rich as they are in Word. You won't be able to keep
the formatting and reapply it, but you can make changes to a finished
outline without having to format as you go.

Create the outline first without applying any numbering formatting to it.

Then open up the Numbering Task Pane, then click on "Customize
Numbering" at the bottom of the screen. From there, you can select a
custom sequence and format and then apply that to all items at a
particular outline level. You can also specify the amount of lead space
between the outline number and the text.

UT DannyMac,

I, too, have looked fora way to make a default number system. I think you've
made some really good points and I think a program that is made for
notetaking (and, therefore, outlining) should have the features to do what
you want it to. If this hasn't already been formally suggested, please do so.
I would definitely "agree" with it!
