How do I customize my keyboard for Media Player transcribing?

My boss has just started trying to use a digital dictaphone to send reports
to me through email so I can transcribe them from my end using Windows Media
Player and Word. I need to know how to customize my keyboard, perhaps using
the F1, F2 keys etc, to start, stop and rewind the media player instead of
the mouse so that I can use the system as quickly as I could have on my old
tape machine. Please help!
