How do I customize the colors in the shape fill gallery?

I'm working with a graph and trying to change the colors of the graph
elements. When I click on Shape Fill, the pallete that opens is not very
useful and doesn't match the colors I get in Excel. For example, it has 3
columns with various shades of black. Is there any way of fixing this
problem?

Forgot to mention I'm working in PowerPoint 2007.

Hi

PowerPoint uses the 6 accent colours from the colour part of the theme for
graphs, then those colours 40% lighter. The other main colours you can see
in the palette background 1, text 1, background 2 and text 2 also from the
colour part of the theme. A theme consists of colours, fonts and effects
(e.g. shadows, reflections, etc) and you can amend the whole theme or just
bits of it. So, looking just at the colours, go to Design Tab and click on
the colours down arrow. You can see there are built in ones, or at the
bottom there is an option to 'Create new Theme colours'.
