This is nothing to do with Word specifically.
You have brightness and contrast controls on your monitor -- figure out how
to use them.
You can also change the background color from white to something easier on
the eyes. Go to Control Panel > Display > Appearance. Click the Advanced
button. Select "Window" in the Item dropdown. Click the Color 1 button, and
click Other in the display. Choose some nice pastel color, pale yellow or
beige. That will become the background color for most Windows programs,
including the "paper" color in Word.
