how do I defend myself against automatic security updates

Using Windows XP. Automatic updates activated. For the past 3 months every
time I allow updates from Windows my Internet Explorer fails to work anymore
- it just hangs. The advice I get from Microsoft is to download updates.
Updates are the cause of the problem. This has been confirmed for me by my IT
consultant - that Windows security updates aren't compatible with some other
security programmes. I wonder if that's deliberate? I've now deleted all
74 updates received since May 07. I want to exercise the choice of what
updates to download, but can find nowhere that Microsoft offers me that
freedom.

Not sure why you are asking your Microsoft Windows question in this
Microsoft Office newsgroup, but try clicking on Start | Control Panel |
Automatic Updates.

Since the question has been answered, I have a question of you. Why would
you want to block them. They are for the protection of your computer. For
years Microsoft was criticized for not fixing the security problems.
Uninstall either Norton or McAfee, and install a compatible anti-virus
program. You will find that your problems go away. I suggest that updates
are not the cause of the problem. Incompatible software on your system is.

I wonder how you will make an informed decision as to what update to
download? Are you clairvoyant and can see what an update will do to your
system? Did you carefully examine all 74 updates that you have deleted, one
at a time and found each of them to be deficient? I think not!

Time to get a new IT consultant!

Seriously, if you are having that many problems with MS updates, then there
is something drastically wrong on your system. You should seek help (not
the same IT consultant, but perhaps a local computer sales/repair shop) to
resolve the issues on the system that are causing you to see problems with
WU/MU. Are there any PC User Groups in your area?

Sky, I liked your mention of PC User Groups in the area. Here us a page
where the OP could find Groups that belong to the Association of Personal
Computer User Groups: http://cdb.apcug.org/loclist.asp
