How do I delete/unlock PROTECT DOC. in Word on Vista?

I converted my OS to Vista when I bought a new PC. I'm now unable to edit a
Word doc that I'd no problems w/ before in. It's been saved w/ .doc and
..docx. How do I remove or turn off the PROTECT DOC feature permanently?
Word Help suggests going into TOOLS and/or FORMS, but I can't find either.
I right click on PROTECT dOC menu, but drop down menu offers no option to
remove it. Am going slightly bonkers. H-e-l-p.
