How do I disable the automatic virus scan when opening files?

Every time I open an existing Office file, the system runs a virus scan on
the file and it takes a very long time to actually see the file opened. If
these files were created by me or if they've already run through the virus
scan once, how can I disable the virus scan function in the Office products?

I'm assuming that you use Norton AntiVirus. Here are instructions from
Microsoft on how to disable the Norton Office add-in
