How do I disable Windows Messenger?

D

Dr. Jim

I just installed the Student Edition of Office 2003 on a laptop running Win XP Pro. Before installation, I had disabled the Windows Messenger program throught the control panel. Once I installed Office 2003, the icon appears in the system tray. When I right-click on it to exit the program, it says I cannot shut down the program while another program is using it (Outlook/Word/Excel).
How do I completely remove the Windows Messenger program? Will I screw-up Office 2003 or other programs if I complete;ly remove this program? Must I have to have Messenger on my system
If I can't remove the darn program completely, how can I disable it so that it does not run and does NOT show up in my system tray
Many thanks in advance for your assistance

In Outlook, choose Tools | Options | Other and uncheck the two Messenger
options at the bottom of the tab. After restarting, there should no longer
be any relationship between Outlook and Messenger.

Just don't start Outlook Express either - it also overrides your Control
Panel preferences and restarts Messenger too. Really annoying.

Eric,
Your suggestion worked perfectly for Outlook 2003.

Thanks,
