Select Compatibility Report in the View menu then click the Check Document
button on the Compatibility Report palette in the Toolbox.

However, I believe you may be under a misconception :) A Compatibility
Report isn't generated when you Open a file. It's intended to determine
whether any changes you make in the file are likely to be incompatible with
the file format you're saving in. I.E., if you open an Excel 97-2004 (.xls)
workbook & create a Chart or other SmartArt object the Compatibility Check
will warn you that the content will be converted if you continue to save in
that same (.xls) format.

In addition to Bob's answer, you will find the compatibility report
available to you in File > Save As dialog boxes (click the compatibility
report button) and in the Toolbox (click the Toolbox button on the
standard toolbar and then click the Toolbox's Compatibility Report button.
