How do I do a legal contract for a personal loan?

I am lending a friend a sum of money and we want a legal contract to confirm
the loan terms.

If you insist on doing it yourself, I'd recommend buying a lawyer
program such as Home & Business Lawyer Deluxe 2005 by Broderbund.
It's better than nothing.
