How do you do monograms in Word?

Select the middle letter. Go to Format > Font and click the second
tab. Set the Position controls to raise the letter by the desired
number of points (probably 3 or 4 points will do).

I tried that with the word "monogram" and ended up "mono" an
"o" halfway off the baseline, and "gram".

That's a monogram?

One common form of simple monogram has the initials of the first and middle
names on the left and right and the initial of the last name in the center,
larger than the other two. To make this in Word, you would have to increase
the font size of the center initial and then lower it so that it is
vertically centered between the other two letters.
