How do I do for columns not to create a section break? (Word 2007)

Hi, I was working on my essay and I selected some text to make it show as two
columns (Page Layout -> Columns -> Two), but once I did that, my page
numbering got messed up and after the page with my little 2 columns, the
numbering started from one again, as if I had created a section break. I
tried playing around, deleting the section break when in draft view, but it
only deletes my columns.. how do I do for me to keep my columns AND my
numbering the way it was, without any section break? Thank you very much in
advance if you can help.

Columns are a section property. You cannot change the number of columns
without inserting two Continuous section breaks on either side of the
multi-column section. But you can set the page numbering to "Continue from
previous section."

Hi,

Thank you for your help. I actually tried doing that, but I didn't manage,
it kept starting from 1. The only command I was able to see was "link to
previous section" under the Design tab of the "Header & Footer Tools" tab,
and it didn't help. Could you please specify where and/or how I find the
"continue from previous section" option?

Actually I just found it under "Page number -> Format Page numbers", but I
have another problem, the columns created 2 sections it seems. Eg:

The pages before the columns, and even that page included say "Section 1".
The page just after that says "Section 3". So when I click on continue from
previous section, or link to previous section or whatever, it is trying to
find "Section 2" which is nowhere to be found, probably is a section break
created by/for the columns? In any way, it is not working :-(

section; Section 3 is the following single-column section. You must have the
insertion point in the given section in order to format the page numbers
there.

Place the insertion point in the two-column section, select the Insert tab,
then click Page Number in the Header & Footer group and choose Format Page
Numbers... Choose "Continue from previous section." Repeat for Section 3.

I had the exact same problem last week while working in W2003. I had not
encountered it before, but remembered reading somewhere that the way to
expose the "missing" header and footer for a continuous break is to insert a
temporary page break within it. I did that and was able to set the
numbering to continuous.

Word 2007 has made this a little easier by allowing you to access Format
Page Numbers from anywhere on the page. In Word 2003 and earlier, you can
access Format Page Numbers from a section in the middle of the page if you
go through Insert | Page Numbers. You just have to be careful to close the
Page Numbers dialog using Close rather than OK so as not to insert a new
PAGE field.

Sorry to say, that does not correct the page numbering:

Section 3 is the first main text section with page numbering set to start at
1. Last pg no. is 7
Section 4 is after the first continuous section break (text within is dbl
column) with page numbering set to start at 1
Section 5 is after the second continuous break section with page numbering
set to start at 1. last pg no. is 1

If I put the cursor in section 4 and edit the page number so that it is
continues from the previous section, the page number in section 5 becomes 2.
In other words it was the page number in section 5 that was changed, not the
one in section 4.

If I put in the temporary page break, I can change section 4's footer
numbering to continue from... . Then the section 5 page number becomes 8.

Reasonably sure. All of the page numbers in section 3 were correct. In the
original W2003 file, I actually I had five or six double column passages. I
believe that I was not very systematic about changing the settings, so my
changes didn't seem to work. I did for a time think the file was corrupt
because of the way the cursor jumped back to the last page of section three
every time I changed a footer. I used W2007 open and repair, but there was
no corruption. Further, the fix pretty much proves it to have been a
formatting error--mine.
