How do I download free updates without activex?

Everytime I try to download free updates for microsoft officexp/outlook the
screen asks for an activex download because my browser does not show the
activex address that is recommended. Does anyone know why this is necessary
and/or if it is safe to change internet settings to accomodate such a
download?

Using ActiveX content directly from Microsoft should be a safe download.
Sometimes is necessary to download files.
