What are the basic toold involved in drawing the axes of a curve and a curve
itself in a word document?

There are no tools for drawing graphs as such, just the lines and curves on
the Draw toolbar; these are sufficient for simple stuff, but if you need a
mathematically accurate graph, do it in Excel and import it.

Actually, you can insert a chart using Word via Insert > Object, then select
either Microsoft Excel Chart or Microsoft Graph Chart. You can change the
Chart Type to create a Line chart. How smooth your curve is will depend on
your data.
