how do I edit the "Table Normal" style?

I want to create a new table style in Word 2003.

Most of the existing styles in Normal.dot are based on one called "Table
Normal",
however Table Normal does not appear in the list in the Style and Formatting
task pane when I select to show all styles.
Can I not edit it?

No, Table Normal cannot be edited.

Bah! Whyever not?
You can edit the "normal" style (which very usefully lets you
cascade changes through nearly all the other paragraph styles) -
why won't Microsoft let us edit "Table Normal" as well? :-/

You can choose some other table style (or create one), edit it, and then
select it as the "Based on" style for other table styles.

As you've noticed, however, table styles have other drawbacks that make them
Not Ready for Prime Time.

That's a kind of work around,
thanks ...

I rather unimpressed with Word's Table Styles at the moment! How many more
years of Word development is it going to take before they're ready for prime
time?!? /sighs/
