How do I enter text in a text box?

I used to know how to do this. Now when I click inside a text box, it creates
a second, smaller text box. All I want to do is to be able to type text like
I used to. Please help.

Just a wild guess, but if you're using Word 2007, perhaps the default to
create text boxes inside a drawing canvas is throwing you off.

Try clicking Tools > Options > General and clearing the Automatically Select
Drawing Canvas When Inserting Autoshapes check box.
