It depends what you mean by 'erase' and what the object of the exercise is.
For most practical purposes deleting the file and emptying the recycle bin
will work, but to avoid forensic discovery you would have to be far more
thorough than that using software that writes over the used space several
times - and even then if it was crucial that the file was removed without
trace, I would want to utterly destroy the hard drive.
