how do i find "normal.dot template"

M

mjerh

i have Word 2002 and Vista Home Premium.

I was told: "The way to change the default font in Word is to edit the
Normal.dot template. Change the font there and save it again."

i have Arial set to default in Word>format>font>default.
i have searched for 'normal.dot template' and nothing comes up. i find other
..dot, but no normal. what i get most of is '.doc'.

i've been doing searches, and just now found a normal.dot, it looks like a
Word document, i do the format>font>default thing and it shows up as Arial. i
remember doing something in XP to set the default and it stayed at Arial,
Times New Roman didn't keep popping up like with this Vista comp.

Check Tools - Options - File Locations - Templates. Note the location.
That's where Normal.dot is stored. To see it, you might need to tell Windows
Explorer to display hidden/system files.

I do have 'show hidden files' checked. i found the file location following
your directions. i found a Word document named 'normal.dot', but it took
more clicks that it told me in the file location.
I clicked on 'Normal.dot' and it opens as a Word document. 'Arial' is
showing in the font box. But at times, TNR will be the font that is there
and I have to change it. That happens in Word and Outlook, but I don't
remember it happening in Excel. I wanted to just uninstall TNR like I did on
my XP computer.
"to edit the Normal.dot template. Change the font there and save it
again."--is that what i did by setting the default [in
Word>format>font>default]? If so, why does TNR keep coming back??

Hello,
you must not double click on the "normal.dot", because then a new document
is opened based on "normal.dot" (like if you select File|New... in Word).
Close all Word windows first to make sure, "normal.dot" is not in use.

Then RIGHTclick onto the "normal.dot" icon in the location you found it
already and from the context menu select OPEN (not "New").
Then the normal.dot itself is being opened.
Change the font as said and save (File|Save) and close the file.

Hope, this helps. If not, please ask, if you have any more questions.

Sincerely,
Andre

thank you, Andre. that explains why i had a new document opening up before.
What about Outlook, does this cover that, too?

No, to change the font in Outlook you have to go a different way (there is an
menu option for this in fact):

Select Tools | Options... from the menu.
Select the "Mail Format" tab.
Click "Fonts..." (under Stationery and Fonts).
Choose "Font..." for "When composing a new message:", "When replying and
forwarding:" and "When composing and reading plain text:".

There you go.

Special case: If you have stationery defined to be used by default under
"Use this stationery by default:", the stationery's font may override the
font you have just specified. You can either choose "<None>" as the default
stationery, adapt the stationery to include your favorite font, or make
Outlook ignore font specified in stationery altogether. To do so, click
"Fonts..." under "Stationery and Fonts".
Make sure either "Always use my fonts" or "Use my font when replying to and
forwarding messages" is selected under "Stationery fonts".

Sincerely,
Andre

I had everything set to Arial in there. I did change under "Stationery and
Fonts".
to "Use my font when replying to and forwarding messages" from "Always use
my fonts". I'll see if that makes a difference.
Thanks.

The absolute easiest way to change a default font in any version of Word up
to 2007 is to have an open blank document in the Word program then click on
Format, Font and in the window that opens select the font you want to use.
Then at the bottom left of the window click on the word Default and select
Yes to make the change in the dialog box that opens. Close the document and
Word and the change is saved to the Normal.dot file automatically.

For Word 2007 click on the Home tab then the little arrow in the lower right
corner of the Font box. Change the Font dialog just like you would do for
any of the previous versions of Word.

M

mjerh

i've done all this, and still once in awhile Times New Roman is there instead
of Arial.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

If Word is reverting back to TNR 10 point font, you probably have an issue
with the current Normal.Dot file. Unless it is extensively altered (special
headers/footers, macros, etc. do a search of the hard drive for all
Normal.dot files. With Word not running, delete all that are found and then
remove them from the recycle bin. Start Word again and normal.dot is
automatically recreated. Reset the font. You should not have any more
problems with Normal reverting back to TNR.

If the file is saved in another computer and you open it in yours, the
default font for that file is going to be whatever font the file was created
in.

M

mjerh

When i do a search --"location:Local Hard Drives (C:)"-- it tells me "No
items match your search."

I did find in when in Word this way: Check Tools - Options - File
Locations - Templates. should I delete that?

L

LVTravel

If you are not finding the NORMAL.DOT template file/s on a search you need
to turn on the radio button on Show hidden files and folders, located in
Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View. There should not be a check
mark in Hide extensions for...... immediately below that. OK out and
rerun the search for NORMAL.DOT on the C drive.

You should find at least two, if not more instances. The default location
for one should be in C:\D & S\user name\Application data\Microsoft\Templates
and another should be in the same area but in Office\Recent instead of
Templates and a third may be in D & S\user name\Recent. (User name is the
user name used to log into Windows and D & S would be Documents and
Settings.)

Let me know if Search then finds the files. If so, delete all of them. The
way you would have done it is within Word and it possibly wouldn't have
cleared the issue.

Also, did you understand what I said in my last paragraph in the previous
response about opening a document created in a different version of Word?
