i have been told to install 'required office upgrade' to solve a problem in
office - ie I can't open any files or save anything since there was a windows
upgrade this morning - I can only find out what the upgrade is if i turn off
my norton firewall and av prog - don't want to do this - so how do I find out
what the required office upgrade which will solve this problem is - so I can
download it and access my files again

am using office 2003

For some reason it appears the Windows XP update to correct a potential
problem with Internet Explorer has created a conflict with Office programs.
I was having the same problem with both Word and Excel.

I also downloaded the Office update and it did nothing.

What I eventually did, was go back and Restore the System to before the
download occured....(I also found this tip on the same newsgroup, so I take
no credit).

It is pretty easy actually,

Click on Start
Click on Help and Support
Click on Performance and Maintenance
Click on Using System Restore to undo changes
Click on Run the System Restore Wizard.

Run the wizard and pick a date prior to Tuesday (that was when Microsoft
sent out the download).

After you have done the restore, you should again be able to access files in
your Office programs.

Let me know how it works out.
