When I try to edit a document using Word 2000, I get the error message 'This
document cannot be edited because it contains read-only embedded fonts'. How
do ensure that I dont get this error and I'm able to edit all documents that
are giving me this error

Make sure that any fonts that are embedded have an Editable embedding
license.

Thank you for the response, Suzanne.

For Microsoft Word 2000, Does the editable embedding license come along with
the purchase of Word? Is it an option during installation of Word?

How is it that some of my colleagues are able to edit the same word
document that gives me the error mentioned, without any special license?

The document in question was create using Word 97 and is now being accessed
using Word 2000.

Any further assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated.

The license varies from font to font. You can see what level of embedding is
permitted for a given font by examining its Properties in the Fonts folder.
If Properties does not have an Embedding tab, you need the font properties
extension (get it from
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/property/property.htm). Note that Office
no longer permits Installable embedding at all (for various commercial and
security reasons).

It's also possible that the message in this case is bogus. You might try
opening the document as read-only, then changing the font and saving under a
different name.

Suzanne, You're response has help me understand the situation to a great
extent.
However, my problem remains.

The word document in question seems to be using 'Prestige' font through out
the document. I installed the font properties extension tool and realized
that the embaddability for this font (prestige) is 'Installable embedding
allowed'. You've stated that Office no longer permits this level of
embedding. Is that why I'm unable to edit the document? How can I edit this
document?

The message does not appear to be bogus. I'm unable to change the font for
this document and I'm unable to save the document. Renaming does not solve
the problem either.

From the fact that you have checked on the font's embedding license, I would
guess that you have it installed. If that's the case, then the message is
clearly bogus. I've looked for KB articles on this and can't find anything
that seems to address the specific problem, although it would appear that
Word 2000 might have more font problems than some other versions. You might
try treating the document as corrupt (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm), but I would suggest
that you also post a question in the microsoft.public.word.printingfonts
newsgroup, where you may find assistance from more knowledgeable users.
