How do I fix wd 97 so that it will save documents while operating in XP

I have just upgraded from win 95 to windows XP. I have
installed service pack 1 and 2 for MS Office 97. I can
save files generated in all office applications except
word. When I attempt to save a document wd97 truncates
the file name to the first letter, then closes due to an
error.
