How do I force Word to use UK date format

I am trying to mail merge dates from Excel into a Word document, but they are
always displayed in US style. eg 4/9/2006 (4 Sept 2006) is converted to 9
April 2006 on merging. I have used the \@ "d MMMM yyyy" switch as given in
the Help items.

In Windows' Control Panel, open Regional and Language Options. In the
Regional Options tab, set the format to English (United Kingdom). If
Word/Excel are already running, you'll need to close and restart them for it
to take effect.

Thanks for this suggestion but the UK settibngs are the default on my
machine, so I don't think the problem lies there. I assume that there must be
something about the way that the date is picked up from Excel that over-rides
the regional formats.

How are the dates formatted in Excel? Format, Cells, Number tab, and look at
Locale.
