how do I format alphanumeric numbers in excel?

Q

I cannot get General formatting to work with a number such as 98E195.
The width is plenty big enough, but the display shows 9.8E+196.

What can I do to get this to display correctly?

There are 2 ways to solve this. The first way is to format the cells as TEXT
before you enter your data. This will prevent Excel from trying to
"translate" the text into a number in scientific notation.

The second method is to place an apostrophy ' in front of the text as you
type it. This will tell Excel that the content is a label and not a value.
The ' will not show in the cell, but will appear in the formula bar when the
cell is active.
