How do I format Excel 2007 to accept dates in the 1800's?

I am using data in Excel 2007 from Access 2007 but Excel does not recognize
dates in the 1800's. Any resolution to this error?

This is not 2007 specific, it has been the same for all versions of XL. You
can only enter them as text and then no calculations are possible on this
