How do I freeze column names to view when scrolling?

I have created some large lists on a spreadsheet. I would like the titles of
the columns to stay in view as I scroll down but cannot find how to do this.

Hi Tom

click in the first cell under your titles (ie A2) choose window / freeze
panes
use window / unfreeze panes to remove

you can also freeze columns & rows at the same time - click underneath & to
the right of what you want to stay "frozen" and then use the window / freeze
panes menu option.

I tried to freeze a column and a row and it will only freeze one. I cannot
get them both to freeze. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Stephan,

Put your cursor where you are wanting the column/row frozen at, then click
window/freeze panes. i.e. if you are wanting the first row to stay there as
well as column A & B, put your cursor in cell C2. That will freeze both the
first row as well as columns A & B from moving.

When I try to freeze one row, the 20 rows below it will also freeze. Does
anyone have a solution to allow for just one row to freeze?

Unfreeze the panes for those 20 rows (Window | Unfreeze panes) then
CTRL-Home will take you to cell A1. Put the cursor in A2 and click on Window
| Freeze panes. Now if you scroll down you should see the top row visible at
all times, and CTRL-Home will always take you back to A2.

The freezing rule is..................

All rows above and columns left of the selected cell will be frozen under
Window>Freeze Panes.

To freeze row 1 select A2

You cannot freeze a single row in the middle or bottom of your window if that's
what you're wanting.

I'm having trouble freezing both the column and the rows. I'm pretty sure
I've seen this done before but it's not working right now.

I click in the correct cell and I can get either the column or the row to
freeze, but not both. I want the column headings (listed in a row) AND the
first column (column A) in the spreadsheet to freeze so that I can scroll
left to right AND up and down in the sheet while still keeping the headings
and first column in place.

Any ideas why this wouldn't be working right now??

I don't know what you see as the correct cell but B2 would freeze column A and
Row 1

Remember............everything above and left of the selected cell.

Thanks for your reply. Yup, B2 is the cell I'm trying. I know I've done it
before in different spreadsheets, but I don't understand why it's not working
now. Can you think of a setting or something that I might have setup wrong?

I can't think of anything that would prevent the freezing of row 1 and column A
in this case.

Thanks, Gord. I don't know what the problem is either.

It'll keep only one direction frozen at a time. I'm thinking there must be
some weird setting messed up somewhere. Oh, well, if anyone has any brilliant
ideas, I'd love to hear them.

There is no setting within Excel that limits the freeze to just a row or column
if you are indeed selecting B2 before Windows>Freeze Panes

Got an idea how to freeze/split panes under a row in the middle of a
spreadsheet:
group rows above the header row (the one you want always to be seen)
close this group
split or freeze panes below the header row.
splitting will allow you to return easily to the rows above the header row,
simply by opening the group and may be adjusting the splitting line.
