How do I get a header to span multiple columns?

I am fairly sure this can be done, but I am not sure how.

For example, I want the same header for columns A and B.

Select A1 and B1.
From the Menu Bar:
<Format> <Cells> <Alignment> tab,

Expand the "Horizontal" box and click on "Center Across Selection",
Then <OK>.

Click in A1 and type what you wish.

Hi Walter,
in Ex2003: mark both cells (A1:B1), in Format>Cells>Alignment check
option "Merge cells", that's it.

Do you know another way to accomplish the OP's question?

Merge should be avoided if at all possible.

I realize you're not the OP, and I did read the entire thread!

When Don commented about the inadvisability of using "merged" cells,
YOU questioned Don about an alternate.

That generated my question to you as to whether or not you tried my
suggestion as an alternative to "merged" cells.

I don't believe my perception of your question to be a "left field"
misinterpretation.

SO ... are you actually asking for a *third* option?

If so, what might you be trying to accomplish that the first two suggestions
don't fulfill?

Independent who realized what or whom in this thead, the "Center
Across Selection" formatting feature is a cool stuff. - I didn't know
it - or used it in the past yet - in this context.

In the "old days" of XL, don't remember if it was XL97, but maybe pre-97 -
probably XL5.0,
that "Center Across Selection" was the default, with the icon on the tool
bar performing that procedure.

Don't know why Redmond, in their infinite wisdom, made the change to the
much less desirable "merge" as the default, toolbar icon.

Appreciate the feed-back.
