how do i get access fields to merge in word in the correct format

I have just loaded Ms Office XP Pro - which has been working on my previous
machine - onto my new computer and when i send an Access query to merge with
a Word document the field are not in the correct format i.e. 24-Apr-2006 will
appear as 4/24/2006 and £166.50 will appear as 166.5 - I hhave used Office
since 1995 and have never had this trouble before.
